Best known for his high voice, unique guitar playing and songwriting (“Nature”, “Feel Us Shaking”, “Did You Ever Look So Nice”) rock, reggae and folk singer/songwriter Sean Kelly front man for The samples was born February 7, 1965 in Norwalk, Connecticut. The son of a WW2 veteran and a mom who worked construction to put food on the table, Kelly grew up in Vermont. While attending only one year of high school, he began playing guitar and composing his own songs. After moving to Colorado in 1987 to start a band, Kelly became a fixture on local club stages as the front man for The Samples, playing original songs with a variety of rock, reggae and folk. When not touring with The Samples, he enjoys playing his songs acoustically. The Samples are currently recording their 20th album, Indian Summer, to be released later this year. Kelly’s songs have been featured in Perks of Being a Wallflower and more recently in television’s Younger and in ads for MSNBC’s midterm election coverage.
The Thieves About
The Thieves About is an alternative rock band based in Encinitas, CA – a small beach community just north of San Diego. Singer and guitarist J. Scott Gavin moved to Encinitas from the Phoenix area in 2015. In 2017, he began collaborating with bassist Jeff Redding. Chicago native Brian Ulery joined as the band’s drummer shortly after and the trio immediately began writing and performing in bars and music clubs throughout the San Diego area.
In late 2017, The Thieves About recorded and released their self-titled debut EP. The band’s popularity grew and the trio began performing all over Southern California and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
Looking to further evolve their sound, the band picked up lead guitarist John Reikes in late 2018. Now a 4-piece, The Thieves About quickly grew their sound to fill their new larger canvas. Shortly thereafter, the band wrote and recorded their sophomore EP, The Chaos Theory. The first single off the EP, “Hurricane,” immediately received air play on San Diego radio stations.
With its 1990s-influenced sound, the band’s music pays homage to the flannel-clad days of Generation X.
