After nearly two decades on the road, the alt-country band Son Volt is now traveling in support of their sixth studio record Honky Tonk, released earlier this spring.
Son Volt Biography
Son Volt is an alternative country band formed by Jay Farrar, one of the founding members of the 90s band Uncle Tupelo. After nearly two decades of touring and traveling with his current band Son Volt, Farrar has honed his skills capturing the sights and sounds of a real American journey – a gift which springs up once again on the band's sixth studio album Honky Tonk, released earlier this spring. As with their last record (2009's American Central Dust), Son Volt favors acoustic over electric on this new venture, seeking to flesh out the true-blue honky tonk music of all the influential places from Nashville to Bakersfield that inspired their sound and vision.
While Son Volt takes their lyrical themes in a new direction by exploring stories of the heart on Honky Tonk, it is their steel pedal sound and twin fiddles that makes this album truly memorable. In a sonic twist reminiscent of the Grand Ole Opry heyday of the 1950s, Son Volt pursue the classic sound of mid-twentieth century roots music while simultaneously sprinkling modern influences into the mix. It is in the pedal effects and studio distortion that Honky Tonk becomes more than a nod to decades past: by blending elements from traditional "honky tonk" music with strategic technical manipulations, Son Volt create their own sound and style that comes across brilliantly both in the studio and on the stage.
