Leif

My name is Leif. I hail from Leucadia by way of San Diego previously from SF originally of Marin County.
If you asked me to describe the music I play, I’d tell you it’s too difficult to describe. If you asked me again, I’d tell you mid-tempo, “positive” music and cite Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz or Stephan Pompougnac’s Hotel Costes albums as inspiration. In short, I try to create a unique sound that could be classfied as modern lounge music: a wide range of head bobbing smooth grooves from Hip-hop to house to jazz to world music to dub to downtempo—all with an electronic, remixed sound in common.
It all started after my first true taste of electronic music at an Oakland massive. When I went to Amoeba records and asked a clerk what the one album I should buy that day was, the guy sold me the original Mark Farina Mushroom Jazz album. Although it wasn’t what I was expecting at the time, little did I know how much an influence that album would have on my future musical pursuits.
After spending years in the San Diego house music scene, when I moved to Leucadia, a coastal bedroom community in North County San Diego known for its sleepy, surfer-town vibe, there was no house music to be found, or any electronic music at all for that matter. Though our town slogan “Keep Leucadia funky” sounds nice, there was no funk to be found.
It was a combination of wanting to create something better and a hunch that lounge music would be a fit that got be to go buy my first pair of tables. I haven’t looked back since.
Now, almost 5 years later, I am very proud to share with you the Underground Lounge. A place in North County, where we will be able to celebrate good electronic music, and especially good dance music. Check out www.undergroundlounge.com for more details.
If you’re looking for a musical recommendation, I suggest checking out the Mushroom Jazz and Hotel Costes albums I cited above. I also highly recomment J. Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, or Live! In the Mix albums. Other favorite groups or artists are: Thievery Corporation, Nightmares on Wax, Bonobo, Fourtet, RJD2, Erlend Oye, and People Under the Stairs.
